Scientific Accuracy

Scientists OK Gore’s movie for accuracy – Yahoo! News

Will this end the frustrations of the scientists and activists who have dedicated entire careers to learn about the planet, about its climate and about man’s role as the sole steward of the environment?

With knowledge comes responsibility. Those who shun knowledge shun responsibility. Anyone who can understand this truth will understand the difference between George Bush and Al Gore (or any rational human being, for that matter.)

Mortality Rates for Journalists and British Soldiers in Iraq

The Guardian blog has a poignant piece about the number of dead journalists in Iraq.
The fact of the matter from Guardian Unlimited: News blog

What is striking is that the number of dead journalists, 127, is lower than the number of British military casualties in Iraq, 113. This number, 113, is shockingly lower than the more than 2500 for the American military (at the time of the article’s writing). Hence, the number of British casualties is roughly 5% of the number of American casualties.

This may sound reasonable, but looking at some estimates of numbers–like this one in Washington Post National Weekly Edition–the number of British troops is roughly 10% of that of American troops. Hence, assuming that the number of contingents from each country has not changed much, the American casualty rate is about 2500/135000, or 1.8%, while the British rate is 113/10000, or 1.1%. This means that the British casualty rate is almost 40% lower.

Could this be because the British are administering more “peaceful” areas? Hardly. After all, Basra is hardly a calm place. Certainly, the American contingent is administering larger, more violent regions like Baghdad, but this alone cannot explain why the casualty rate is so much higher. American and British forces are partners in this campaign, but the British troops have not been targeted as avidly as the American troops. This is indubitably due to the fact that they have not committed as many stupid acts like Abu Ghraib to invite anger and violence.

It is possible that British troops are better equipped than their American counterparts. Rather, that they have armored vehicles at all.

Metals are conductors of electricity. They sometimes conduct heat very well, also. Graphite is a metal that conducts electricity well, but heat poorly. If one were to view mankind as a similar medium that can conduct a current, what would be that substance that mankind conducts? What would it be that it does not conduct, or the substance that it insulates? Judging by the stupidity of this US Representative, one is reminded again that humanity is often a superb conveyor of ignorance and moral depravity.

Global Warming is Still True

National panel supports ’98 global warming evidence – The Boston Globe

Yes, yet another scientific panel has concluded that global warming is real and man made. Whether this will place pressure on politicians to speed up the glacial pace at which they address environmental issues is unknown.

The following graph, published in the Boston Globe, ought to relieve any doubts that people harbored about the reality of global warming. This single graph represents 10,000 years of data. It would be so nice for the doubters of global warming to produce a single graph that either corrects or contradicts this valuable graph.

Military’s Darkest Hour in Iraq?

In Haditha, Memories of a Massacre

On November 19, 2005, US troops responded to an improvised explosive device (IED) that claimed one marine’s life by slaughtering 19 people near the explosion in cold blood. The events are no longer a matter of dispute. The investigation now seeks to find the guilty parties.

Assuredly, the incident will be dismissed as an anomaly, just as Abu Ghraib was. Assuredly, assurances will be given that justice will be served in the end. Perhaps, the price tag of $1500 to $2500 that the US military has paid as compensation for each life that it took may even be raised to some amount greater $5000 per life.

But assuredly, the dark cloud that hovers over this conflict will only get darker. Is this the purpose we envisioned for our best trained soldiers? Why is this question considered an act of heresy?

Why is it that in Iraq and elsewhere, the British soldiers and the Australian soldiers can effect much greater change without firing any bullets? See what Australian troops did in East Timor recently.

Are Americans out for blood or for peace? If it is for blood, then the terrorist won, assuredly.

General Motors Formally Quits the Automaking Business

It is true. GM no longer cares to compete with other automakers. Instead of investing in research and development to make better cars, GM has elected to continue to bribe people to buy GM cars, cars that they would not otherwise buy. It is a sad confession for the erstwhile automotive giant to make, but apparently, the company could no longer deny what has been painfully obvious to the public at large: GM cars suck ass. What other message can the offer of free gasoline for a year convey?

GM cars are not fuel efficient, they lag in reliability and features, and the are built upon decades old chassis, engines and technologies. Offering outright cash to customers had run its course and dangerously thinned GM’s profit margins. These cash bonuses were a gamble aimed at reversing the loss of market share that GM has been experiencing, and they failed: GM lost and continues to lose market share.1

There must be a million GM shareholders who must be lamenting the fact that the company into which they had placed their money (and faith) had elected to continue a program of ineffective bribery instead of building more marketable automobiles.

The management of GM were once captains of industry. Now, they are not even greenhorns of accounting. Good night, and good luck.

Rock Star with Ball

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Floyd star switches concert venue

So, Roger Waters has the balls to play Israel, but is perhaps meek enough to be swayed by Palestinian claims of being “oppressed”. Technically, his music is banned in most of the Arab world, and the ruling Hamas party of the Palestinian territories officially considers British nationals like Waters enemies of Islam and Palestinians. Ergo, is Waters promoting peace by changing the venue for his concert to a place where Arabs and Israelis cohabit peacefully? After all, it is not the Palestinian inhabitants of this peaceful city that requested the change of venue. It was the party that wants Israel wiped out. Hmmmm….

It is clear that Waters is not trying to take sides in the matter, and his courage to play in Israel at all is admirable and commendable. (Madonna, the material and Cabalah girl has yet to announce any tour dates in Israel.) But, is Waters aware of the tangled web he weaves when he plays politics?

No Bodies, No Civil War

Even The Wall Street Journal is now in the business of reporting how all news coming out of Iraq is deliberately skewed. According to this article, the Iraqi authorities define criteria for reporting casualties in a way that reduces the number of deaths that are attributed to the aftermath of the Samarra Mosque bombing in February.

Here is the link to the scanned article.

By most criteria, Iraq is already in the grips of a civil war. So why the hassle?
